Meet our Senior Landscape Architect

“I want to work towards a design process where the landscape is integrated as a first principle and planting is an integral part of the final design”

We ask Michael, our Senior Landscape Architect, Michael Grimshaw (pictured above in the center) some questions about who he is and what motivates him.

Why did you become a Landscape Architect? I wanted to design public spaces that inspired people to spend more time outdoors and helped bring green infrastructure into grey urban areas.

Who inspires you? Nigel Dunnett for planting design.

What project inspires you? Parco Dora in Turin because of the use of a brownfield site (large regeneration) and the clever use of plants for Phytoremediation

What will be the big themes for Landscape Architecture in the future? Urban regeneration of brownfield sites, resilient schemes that can cope and flourish in extreme weather events such as drought and flooding (as a result of climate change), and projects that increase the green canopy.

If anyone wants to become a Landscape Architect, what advice would you give? Learn about plants/trees and plant communities as much as possible. Landscape Architecture is a broad profession with a variety of specialisms whether it be design or planning based, it’s important to have a good level of knowledge on both.
