Oxted Quarry, Surrey

Client: Southern Gravel.

In collaboration with: Andrew Black Consulting, OSP Architecture, BECG.

Our preliminary designs set a vision for the future country park, with new housing nestled within acoustic mounding, adjoining a new urban realm celebrating the kilns. There are fantastic features throughout the site that speak to its history, carved stones, rail tracks that took the lime all the way to Brighton, and steep winding stone staircases.

We are working with this client to define the long-term future use of this former quarry. The site is in a complex landscape, within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Metropolitan Green Belt. EDLA has provided landscape advice with regard to how any future land uses could be sensitively accommodated on the site, and mitigation measures to reduce visibility and help new developments sensitively within the site.

Our preliminary designs set a vision for the future country park, with new housing nestled within acoustic mounding, adjoining a new urban realm celebrating the kilns. This will crucially provide access to the kilns for the public, and set the kilns in the heart of the open space and country park. There are fantastic features throughout the site that speak to its history including carved stones, rail tracks that took the lime all the way to Brighton, and steep winding stone staircases.

In the first public consultation in November, almost two-thirds of residents (64%) supported an alternative housing and parkland scheme.
